It's growing!

Well it's nice to see that we finally have some growth on our long ago planted crops! We have just finished harvesting a beautiful bushel of peas and are looking forward to picking some stellar greens this afternoon.

  We also have planted peppers, eggplant and cucumbers in the hoop house. So far we are really happy with the  performance of the plants and are looking forward to watching them grow. 

The pigs are doing really well and are starting to get friendly. They happily come over to the fence and say when we go out to see them. 

It always happens at night

You know for some reason no matter how hard you try you always end up working in the dark.

The reason for tonight's late night escapade you ask?

Three new piggies. We have name themWilbur  Charlotte and Stinky. 

They were very eager to get to their new home and started eating grass even before we could get them out into the pen. 

We are off to eat diner but stay tuned for updates on these crazy piggies

Summer 2014 Start

Thanks to the cold, wet spring everything has been set back a couple of weeks.  As a result we will be starting our Summer CSA program on Wednesday June 18th.  Hopefully this will give the sun enough time to warm things up and get the crops up and growing.
We are looking forward to a great year and thanks to all our customers for coming back for another season.

As part of our 2013 winter CSA program we are offering spring baskets this year. So this week is officially kicking off the start to our very busy season. 

This week we have Rainbow Chard, lettuce,onions and radishes on offer. We are looking forward to next week when we will have our first snow peas of the season!

There are lots of blossoms starting to show up on our new apple trees as well which is very exciting. It's nice to see that they are growing well. 

Due to the unseasonably cool weather we have been having this year things are a little behind. This means that crops that we have planted have been sitting mostly dormant over the past number of weeks. 

Luckily the weather seems to be improving and we are finally starting to see some growth. 

We are looking forward to the upcoming season and look forward to serving up some delicious veggies b

Getting Ready

It is getting to be that time of year when you start to see blossoms and dream of fresh food.  This of course means that we are already in the midst of planting both in the greenhouse and outside. In just a few weeks we will be dishing out the first of the spring vegetables to our CSA customers. Despite a cold start to the season we have a bumper crop of swiss chard and peas and radishes are both well on there way
The landscape is changing a little bit this year on the farm as we have planted a small apple orchard which will hopefully start producing meagerly next year. We are also adding strawberries and rhubarb but they will not make an appearance until next year. It is exciting to see the farm taking shape

Exciting times

Well one of the most exciting things just arrived in the mail! It is of course our seed order. Our kind post man just delivered it right to the door.  We still have a few more seeds to get but we are going to pick those up from William Dam seeds in person. 

We are also branching out this year to a small amount of fruit. We obviously won't have any this year but hopefully in years to come!

What fruit you ask? Well we are going to be putting in some apple trees, rhubarb and strawberries. The strawberries are just going to be kind of a trial run this year. We are really looking forward to having some apples as this is something people often ask us about. We will be planting four varieties of apples: pristine, liberty, goldrush and freedom. 

Cold and Busy

Due to the snow that has suddenly started to fly we have had a busy few days on the farm. What has kept us busy you ask? Well on Friday night (yes night in the dark) we put plastic up on two of our unheated winter hoop houses. We use these houses to store greens for the winter. All of the varieties that we grow are frost hardy they however do not like to be repeatedly snowed upon.

We are also keeping busy with Winter CSA which is actually a lot of fun when you are not freezing your fingers off!
